The history of Alfa Romeo can be traced back to France. It was originally founded in 1906 as Societa Anonima Italiana Darracq by Cavaliere Ugo Stella in partnership with Alexandre Darracq,a French automobile firm. With their factory in portello near Milan, the company first produced two cylinder engines which were built using parts imported from Paris. Alfa Romeo became head of this fabbrica in 1915 having been very skillful in engineering and keen on auto sport. The early four-cylinder engines were replaced by six- and eight-cylinder engines from Merosi and Jano.1916 saw the company come under the direction of Neapolitan entrepreneur Nicola Romeo, who converted the factory to produce military hardware for the Italian and Allied war efforts. In 1920, the name of the company was changed to Alfa Romeo with the Torpedo 20-30 HP becoming the first car to be budged as such. The company enjoyed its first success in 1920 with Giuseppe Campari won the Mugello.Giuseppe Merosi continued as head designer, and the company continued to produce solid road cars as well as successful race cars. With the production of sports cars suspended during the world wars, the company had. Once motor sports resumed after World War II, Alfa Romeo proved to be the car to beat in Grand Prix events.
